When I worked started for the first time now in and around VDI, about seven years, we approached it as the end-all, be-all solution. It was perfect for every user and every scenario, we said. It was the easiest to manage applications and deployment in new or existing user to install. It was the Tesla of his time.
The only problem was, it was complex. And when I work at Microsoft, I was proud. We compared it to a glorious cake layer of complexity. "Look at all the layers need to have for my VDI solution," I said.
We needed a separate layer for networking, storage, computing, connections, applications, desktops, streaming, user persona, OH MY !! And what was worse, most of these layers, the customer requires them to purchase from various vendors. Imagine. Back in the early days of cars, if you wanted a new car, you had all the parts of all the different manufacturers refer. The engine, seats, lights, fenders, running boards and more. And if you designed your car and acquired the parts you had mechanical expertise they have to put it all together. This made cars not only costly but complex and for this very few people owned them.
Then Henry Ford comes and sources all components and uses an assembly line to build a new car for new cars. Not only was he able to make it as easy to make as the starter cranks and drive off, but he lowered drastically the cost of entry so that the Model T a every person car.
I see Nutanix and Citix in the same light.
