An overview of ICANN -

ICANN Privacy

ICANN has been highlighted in the news in recent months, so we wanted to give an overview ICANN and some issues and policies surrounding the organization.

ICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is the group responsible for domain name registry. In July they proposed new rules that would require site owners to disclose their address and limit the use of proxy services. This would apply to domain holders with "commercial" sites in particular. It is a concern because it represents a significant threat to the privacy of owners since anyone can search the database and access to this private information.

Currently, people who own the fields can use the proxy registration to conceal their identity and avoid having themselves listed in the WHOIS database (an online public directory that lists who owns this area, and contains personal information about the owners). Proxy registration allows a certain level of confidentiality and protects the information from these users.

The comment period on the changes related WHOIS just closed on September 6, so ICANN gained some attention this week that the EFF continued to express concern about these proposed policies. The Irish Times also reported last week that ICANN holds its October meeting in Ireland, reflecting the movement of the organization based in the United States to a more global scope.

We are concerned about the implications of some of ICANN related to the privacy policy, and will be keeping an eye on how things develop.

What can you do?
