BYOD or "Bring Your Own Device" is a popular, growing trend that many workplaces follow. Nearly 81% of Americans use their personal mobile devices for work.

the BYOD policy allows employees to use their personal mobile devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to access corporate information and applications workplace. Some small and large companies adopt BYOD policy, arguing that this could reduce costs and increase productivity. However, like all policies, the BYOD policy has advantages and disadvantages.

PRO

  • cost savings to employers: buying smartphones, tablets and laptops for employees, especially those teleworking can become very expensive. With BYOD, employers should not spend money on the purchase of computer equipment for their employees
  • Significant increase in productivity. According to the Huffington Post, the employees are more productive when they have the flexibility to work when and where they want
  • Employee satisfaction :. The flexibility to use a personal device for work improves satisfaction and employee retention. Employees are much happier to work with their favorite devices rather than learning to use a different device.

CONS

  • risk of data breaches :. lost or stolen devices can lead to loss of business or customer sensitive information
  • complications of recovery of corporate data from employees: when an employee leaves or is let go, the company may have problems to retrieve the business data from their personal devices. Companies will create their own BYOD policies to solve this problem
  • Incompatibility issues :. Employees using different types of devices can lead to incompatibility issues due to different versions, conflicts with other platforms, misconfiguration, the unsupported hardware support / software, etc.
