4 Harms Internet Unprotected -

You may have heard that the Internet is a scary place. You may have even been advised to be wary of your online activities.

But what is really so dangerous on the use of unprotected Internet? Julia Angwin, journalist award at The Wall Street Journal and author of "Stealing MySpace," attempts to answer this question because it explores the true dangers of everyday life in what she calls the "digital era".

As a strong supporter of due process for data of everyone, I find that the four items Julia made during his speech "Privacy in the Digital Age" at Shorenstein Center of Harvard present effectively the need for protected Internet freedom and online.

The following is a summary of key negative impacts of the Internet in the hope that you avoid them.

1. Hidden public

Your friend emails you and asks you to meet some private hand to talk about his new job. However, you insist that you are overwhelmed with projects at work, and you offer an instant message just from your computers.

You, of course, the use of Facebook where chat with this old friend using the private messaging is so convenient and easy. She told you all about this new boss hates it, your mutual friend who has gone mad, and even manages to update you on all the family drama. While you two are having this personal conversation, however, others are listening.

The reality is, nothing on the Internet is private.

Although you may think you are just interacting with a friend, you are told how all Facebook a stubborn prick your new boss. Consider your every online action from a cyber game in a room filled audience.

2. The Hall of Mirrors

You go to your favorite search engine, Google, and the search for Obama you are interested in current events. After that, however, you will notice that all your searches are related to Obama.

"Obama's thoughts on the toothpaste."

Well, interesting. You later decide to do research on redecorating your home.

"The views of Obama on redecorating your house."

You are surrounded by information that was suitable for you. Although you may feel like you are in control of your decisions, purchases, or even political affiliation, everything has already been decided for you.

Your online data speaks for you.

It determines what kind of food you want to eat, what kind of house you want to live, even how much money you are willing to pay for something.

3. Financial Manipulation

You and your friend decide to go shopping for office supplies at Staples. The two you choose the exact same stapler. On the starting line, you notice, though, that your stapler costs ten dollars and your friend is just eight. Why is this so? Staples shows you the price they think you're willing to pay based on your personal data.

The data about you is used to provide tailored prices.

You have no control over the price you pay. You can not just go to another Staples, much like the way you can go to another station to the grocery store or gas in a different neighborhood to get a more affordable price.

you walk around with a dollar sign on your forehead.

your financial decisions are made for you. Your credit score follows you everywhere. Your personal data is used to manipulate you.

4. Line-Up Police

Have you a perfect criminal record? An empty font file? If the answer is yes, think again.

You live in a world where you're always suspicious.

Constant monitoring puts you in a line-up you have never been before. You are in the crosshairs of the police, even if you're not a suspect before.

We'll all have these files.

With all this personal information available is not safe.

So what can you do?

Use a virtual private network (VPN)! You can access the Internet through your Internet Service Provider (ISP). All your information - and your computer from the separate IP address - is available when you visit other websites. Therefore, companies are able to collect personal information that relates to your life, spending, and socializing.

Using a VPN to access the Internet, however, you are able to hide all personal information, which protects against damage mentioned above. A VPN acts as a host to a private IP address each time you decide to connect. Your real IP address and all your information related to it, is hidden.

Avoid the evils of Internet use without protection and your own safety! Do not let businesses make your decisions for you.

Free yourself!
