A recent Global Web Index study found that Indonesia has the largest percentage of users on VPN 34 countries examined. Below we take a look at some of the reasons why
Why Indonesia
Indonesia has the 4th largest population in the world -.? Nearly 250 million people. According to the survey published in Wired magazine, 41% of people in Indonesia (which would be 102.5 million) use a VPN. The main reason for this use is cited as "overcome government restrictions." In 2015 Freedom on the Net report, Indonesia has been classified as having Internet experience that was only "partly free".
censorship of content
censorship in Indonesia includes a settlement on the "negative content" meaning officials can block websites if they see fit. this regulation allows authorities to block pornographic or otherwise illegal. Four panels were also created to act as "consulting advice" regarding the various forbidden topics, which include child pornography, hate speech, fraud, counterfeit drugs, illegal investments, gambling and intellectual property rights. Many people in the country have expressed their concerns on this Regulation, citing as censorious and a threat to freedom of expression . In addition, there is concern that regulation works largely unattended.
Blocked Sites
Indonesia also has a blocking sites with questionable content history. In 2014, they blocked Vimeo, a popular video sharing website because it hosts (pornographic) content "inappropriate". Netflix has also been blocked in 2016 by the largest Internet service provider in Indonesia because of concerns about a business license and inappropriate content, "The issue is on the license. They do not follow the rules. They also present violence and adult content, "said director of consumer business.
Another aspect of Internet censorship in Indonesia is their Information and electronic transactions law, which imposes limits on content, with limitations being "in the public interest and for maintaining public order." the rules are loose, however, leaving the filter to be somewhat arbitrary and unclear. ISPs are required to implement the blocks listed in a database, although they may use different software to do.
Monitoring
As described in freedom on the net Indonesian mobile phone users are required to register their numbers with the government. Telecommunications companies should also comply with requests for data from the application of laws and regulations are in place to ask them to build "local data centers." In total, there are 10 laws and 7 "executive regulations" that allow governments and law enforcement to conduct surveillance. Monitoring of these rules is limited, with few checks of abuse.
VPN Use
VPN can be used to circumvent censorship and access the Internet without restriction. With government restrictions described above, it is not surprising to many users in Indonesia use VPN to enjoy an internet free of censorship. Do you like Indonesia and use a VPN?
