The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has launched Privacy Badger 1.0, a tool to stop online monitoring, late last week. As described on their website, Badger privacy is "a browser extension that blocks automatically hidden trackers that would otherwise spy on your browsing habits as you surf the Web."
Badger Privacy is currently available on Chrome and Firefox, and work by considering third domains as users browse online. the tool looks to see if the third areas are monitoring the user. if they do it on three or more sites, Privacy Badger identify them as monitoring and block the domain name accordingly. Privacy Badger is also working with the policy did not follow, and "hopes to restore the appearance of browsing the Web for private inhabitants of the Internet."
the tool provides users with visibility and control over their online privacy, especially regarding online advertising and tracking these ads are implementing. Golden Frog as recently pointed out, this type of control over often lack privacy because users do not always realize what they are signing for or what privacy they abandoned when using a free privacy service.
Privacy Badger is a refreshing announcement of a trusted organization. EFF rightly recognizes that the Badger privacy is similar to other privacy tools offered by Disconnect, Adblock Plus, Ghostery, but recognizes these companies have "business models that we were not quite at ease with. "for example, Adblock Plus now allows ads from certain advertisers and requires users to opt-out. Ghostery records trackers encountered by users likely sell this information to advertisers (fortunately, users must opt-in).
Privacy Badger is a new useful tool, and also a good reminder that it is essential to select a privacy trust company, to review their business model and evaluate their transparency.
