As connected devices increase, children's privacy concerns are also -

There has been a lot of buzz recently about the privacy of children online, both in regarding the information being shared and collected and the safety of various toys technologies.

In February 2016 security research has reported that high-tech companies are not doing enough to protect the privacy and safety of children online. With so many new connected devices, there are also a host of new risks for privacy - and these risks are particularly dangerous for children. Think of all mobile devices, smart toys and social media that children have access. Even things such as baby monitors can be a threat.

The concerns continue to rise, and in June 2016 the attention shifts to "always on" devices that are part of the Internet of Things, such as Echo Amazon. There are questions about whether these devices are breaking existing laws to protect children's privacy (as described below). A report by The Guardian says the companies behind these devices could be fined large sums of money if their devices are collecting data on children without parental consent - which it seems they are - storing voice commands / audio files collected by everyone in the house, including children. Other concerns arise from the way these devices are marketed to children, in an attempt to "turn them into customers" (as well as collect their data).

As mentioned, there is a law to protect the privacy of children online - Online Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) privacy of children, which was adopted by the FTC. This law sets up regulations that require parental consent for children under 13 with various sites. Many fines have been issued under this law, but as reported by the Guardian, there is much more we can do and that "the FTC has been repeatedly criticized for not applying the law." A recent decision (July 2016) by a federal appeals court in favor of Google and Viacom continued to increase these privacy concerns.
